Circu, the Portuguese furniture maker, deals in fantasies. Responsible for the cool red-and-white Rocky Rocket armchair and the Volkswagen-esque Bun Van, Circu’s latest creation for kids is straight out of a fairy tale. The Fantasy Air Balloon is a bed designed to look like the basket of, what else, a hot air balloon, a circular cushion of comfort that is as whimsical as it is magical.
The bed is made with traditional basketry technique, with the rest of the structure of wood with a white lacquered gloss finish. Cleverly hidden drawers can be used as storage, and it can even transform into a sofa. The upholstery is synthetic fur, trimmed in wood with gold leaf details. The strings are made by hand using traditional braiding techniques, and the metal areas are plated in gold.
It’s smart too. An accompanying mobile app (iLight) allows options of music, light and sleep time to be controlled, dimmed and brightened at will to a Disney soundtrack. It’s enough to make you want to be a kid again, full of wonder and amazement at the hugely fun sleeping quarters that the Fantasy Air Balloon provides.
