Now an exclusive specification level instead of a sub-brand, the Maybach designation was recently presented on a coupe concept. Launched during Monterey Car Week, which wrapped up at the Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is an aero-style 2+2 seater coupe, a contemporary interpretation of classical design principles which have existed from the pre-war era. Of note are the split rear windscreen, overlong bonnet and transparent body-colour covers on the rims.

Aficionados of the brand will remember the Maybach Exelero concept built in 2004, itself a subtle homage to the Maybach SW 38 of 1936. Today, however, the Mercedes-Maybach 6 is more likely than ever to preview a proper production model instead of a one-off study.

Within the gullwing doors is a cocoon of luxury, the dashboard display encircles occupants while the windscreen features full-width augmented reality – useful when switching to autonomous driving mode. Miniature body sensor displays feature in the leather upholstery, monitoring passengers’ vital functions while on the move.

Designed to be electrically-motivated, output is rated at 750hp. The 80kWh underfloor battery – compatible with both cable and wireless charging – puts power down through all four wheels for a range of over 500km.
