Disaphol Chansiri

local art makes its mark

As the managing director of DCA Art Consultant, Bangkok-based Disaphol Chansiri advises high-profile corporates and private art collectors in Thailand.

I have enjoyed art since I was very young. My family would take me to see temples, such as The Grand Palace, and other places of worship. There, I was fascinated with the murals and the epic stories they depicted. I also enjoyed reading and whenever I went to the library I always looked at the beautiful art books.

My dad encouraged me to go into art advising. In fact, all my close friends and family were very supportive. I have been collecting art for almost 20 years and always used art advisers. I now have a great team who can help others.

My favourite place to see art in Bangkok is at the Fine Arts Museum. I love to see the old Thai masters and the development of Thai artists. Abroad, I like to visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice because it’s in a beautiful setting. I recently visited Long Museum and Yuz Museum in Shanghai. They are the best places to learn about contemporary Chinese art. I always respect private collectors who build their own museums because it shows how much they support art.

When I visit museums abroad, it̕s always a great pleasure to see a piece of work by a Thai artist. It’s something that makes me proud, especially when it’s hanging next to a world-famous artist. It shows that our art is recognised on an international level. I visited The Modern Museum in Stockholm and there was a painting by Navin Rawanchaikul next to Anish Kapoor in a room full of world famous artists.

I also collect Thai antiques, mostly gold objects such as old toys used by royalty from the Rattanakosin period (1782-present). I find them at antique stores, such as Old Times at River City in Bangkok, or through private dealers. Whenever I buy antiques or art, the investment potential is the last thing I think about. If it appreciates over time, great, but I always advise people to concentrate on what they like and gives them pleasure.

I also like to buy local art works and handicrafts from the places I visit, especially if they are difficult to make or are well-preserved.
