Of Light and Shades

There aren’t many families in the city as glamourous as the Omar Khan clan. Multi-continent provenances, connected to three Royal houses by way of marriage and blessed with movie star good looks, the youngest Khans are the inspiration of Grey Matters, the renowned rug designer’s first retail collection in collaboration with Artèfloor, available only at its outlet at The Gardens Mall, Kuala Lumpur.

Launched under Khan’s diffusion line, Omar Khan Loom, this eight-piece collection is named for his seven nephews and a niece and, like the delightful tykes, each has a distinct personality of its own. From the gloriously floral Annika to the dreamily abstract Lima, Rudy’s haute-horticultural stylings to Dre’s Intrecciato impressionism, these rugs showcase Khan’s trademark texture and dimension brought vividly to life by Artèfloor’s artisans in Ipoh.

A departure from Khan’s usual richly coloured palette, Grey Matters is a meditation on monochrome and revolves around Aurora, a new yarn comprising of lustrous Artsilk fibres available in four shades of grey. To bring out the beauty of the yarn, hand carving is deliberately employed in the construction of the rugs, an intensive, challenging technique which required the time-tested expertise of Artèfloor’s most skilled artisans. Considering the spectacular results, Khan may have just succeeded in making grey the new black.
