Can something that’s practical also be precious? If it’s done by Harry Winston, then the answer is yes. Case in point, the American jewellery house has just made a one-of-a-kind objet d’art known as Emerald Time, a table clock that doubles as a mirror. But instead of emeralds, this precious object is festooned with diamonds and further adorned with glittering blue aventurine; emerald here refers to the cut, which is said to be Winston’s favourite. This glamorous shape also gives this luxurious showpiece a distinctive art deco vibe, a reference to the house’s founding in 1932, the height of the art deco period.

Made entirely in 18k white gold, Emerald Time is covered with 223 brilliant-cut diamonds, 235 baguette-cut diamonds and an emerald-cut diamond, as well as shards of blue aventurine inlaid into the gold frame. Eagle-eyed aesthetes will be quick to notice the juxtaposition of straight, angular lines against delicate, flowing curves, echoing the striking dichotomy between the light of diamonds and the dark blue aventurine. A pivoting mechanism allows it to display either the time and date or a polished mirror surface, and you can see how much attention to detail has been paid when even the flange around the clock’s dial is set with diamonds.
