There are three Cartier boutiques that have a mythical status within the Cartier universe: the Mansion in New York, New Bond Street in London, and 13 rue de la Paix in Paris. Of the three, though, the boutique affectionately known as 13 Paix is regarded by many both inside and outside the Maison as the birthplace, the matrix and the home of not only Cartier, but also fashion, jewellery, style and Parisian culture. Opened in 1899 by Louis Cartier and his father Alfred, the 13 Paix boutique recently completed a complete renovation process that took slightly more than two years and involved three teams of architects from Moinard Bétaille, Studioparisien, Laura Gonzalez.
Almost everything was redesigned and rebuilt in the boutique, based on the key values of radiance, modernity and verticality. To that last element, an atrium has been created in the back so that natural light can permeate every level of 13 Paix. The ground, first and second floors comprise the boutique; the third floor is dedicated to Cartier’s wide range of personalisation, repair and maintenance services; and the fourth floor is home to the high jewellery workshops. The fifth and sixth floors house the archives as well as a residence, which includes a reception, living space, dining room, salon, kitchen and winter garden.
Here are some highlights of Cartier’s 13 Paix boutique:
Almost everything was redesigned from the interiors of Cartier’s iconic 13 rue de la Paix boutique, but the black marble on its façade has been preserved.
Inspired by the inner courtyard of a Parisian building, the atrium creates a verticality to the boutique and allows natural light to flow throughout all six floors.
Everything, from the plant motifs to the fabrics and the furniture, in the residence on the fifth floor has been created exclusively for Cartier.
The Jeanne Toussaint Salon pays tribute to Cartier’s creative director from 1933 to 1970. The salon is located in the former office of hers, who was also known as ‘the Panther’, and is dedicated to presenting the maison’s exclusive products.
There are 18 artisans and experienced jewellers who work on the third and fourth floors of the 13 Paix boutique. Although the boutique is defined by a classic elegance, curves and soft tones, these spaces dedicate to personalisation, repairs and maintenance also feature a more contemporary look.
The Louis Cartier Salon has an extensive collection of rare books and archives from the maison’s storied history. It was designed to reflect Cartier’s office.
The first floor of the 13 Paix boutique is dedicated for engagements and weddings. The golden colours, natural light and relaxed atmosphere creates a Parisian version of the timeless, feminine modernity that Cartier is well-known and beloved for.
The Faune et Flore salon – together with the Art Deco, Indes and Inspiration salons – on the second floor is dedicated to Cartier’s high jewellery creations. Guests can access these salons via the main staircase or, if they prefer, a private elevator.
The private Santos salon on the third floor features a ceramic screen artwork by François Mascarello, and the “Quartier des Petits”, a space for children to try creative activities inspired by Cartier.
The Jean Cocteau Salon has a verse by the poet on a lacquered wooden panel, which reads: “Cartier, the subtle magician, who dangles slivers of the moon on a thread of sun.”
